Abstract

This paper explores the impact of particular articles in The Studio magazine on Kanae Yamamoto who travelled widely during his studies in Europe. His journey included a visit to Russia, which Kanae Yamamoto visited after his studies in Paris. As Yamamoto has stated, his experiences in Russia certainly inspired him to launch the Peasant Art Movement and the Free Painting Drawing Movement.

Furthermore, during WW1 he travelled to London, where he seemed to experience the Arts and Crafts Movement there. Yamamoto has described the indirect influence of William Morris. The British magazine The Studio, related to William Morris's Arts and Crafts movement, was recently found in the archives of the Peasant Art Institute.

Until now, there is little documentation of Yamamoto's stay in the UK and the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on Yamamoto. This paper examines how The Studio may have influenced Yamamoto's printmaking and his activities on his return to Japan.
